It's too violent, too many customs have changed (even his own mother has adopted the kind of homosexual relationship encouraged by authorities eager to control the population) and too few people understand what he has gone through. Only two years have passed for him, but thanks to a quirk of relativity and the fact that he's been travelling near the speed of light, a full decade has passed on earth. He hates fighting – but finds the return to earth even more upsetting. In 1997, the novel's hero William Mandella ( a near anagram of the author's full name Joe William Haldeman) becomes one of the first batch of recruits sent into the far reaches of space to do battle with a clone-based species called The Taurans. The Forever War is a clear attempt to come to terms with that experience – even if it's set light years away. Like so many others, Haldeman was conscripted against his will, plunged into horror, wounded and dropped back into a society that now felt alien to him. He taunts Henry, while Henry is batting and Henry misses but, after the game, when Henry does some fielding practice with a coach, Mike is amazed at Henry’s ability to field every ball without difficulty and fire it accurately in to the coach. He is first spotted playing in a (very) minor league competition by Mike Schwartz, who is a college baseball catcher. The individual in both cases is Henry Skrimshander. Firstly, there is the boy from the ordinary background who becomes a baseball star and secondly there is the baseball star who has doubts about his ability and falls (for a while) from baseball grace, both not uncommon themes. As in cricket, fielding usually takes third place in importance, after batting and bowling/pitching but, in this case, as the title indicates, fielding becomes all important. Harbach’s novel adds to the roster of fine baseball novels and is a very fine effort for a first novel. Baseball is an exception, often dealing with themes found in other US novels such as action heroes, poor boy makes good, sports as a philosophy of life and male bonding. Football, rugby, cricket, basketball have all had novels written about them but not many and few very good ones. He reads a great number of books while he lives out those fifteen years in the confines of one of the rooms in the banker’s lodge. The young lawyer spends fifteen years in solitary confinement just to prove a point. I want to draw your attention to the fact that this story is not merely about greed but is about the hypocrisy of life itself. The banker by the way prefers the death penalty to life imprisonment. The banker stakes two million stating in his excited state that the lawyer was wrong to think one could survive in solitary confinement for so long a time. In this story, he voluntarily goes into solitary confinement to prove a baseless point against the rich banker the point being that life imprisonment was any day better than the death penalty for criminals. This is ironic because at the end of the story, one of the characters through their letter brings out the whole frivolity of life itself. Intellectual topics are being discussed and there is no sign of frivolity in the atmosphere. At this party are many intellectuals, journalists, lawyers, and their like. The party has been given by a rich banker with an excited temperament. ‘The Bet’ by Anton Chekhov begins at a party where the death penalty is being discussed. ‘The Bet’ by Anton Chekhov: Short Story Analysis I provided links below for you to review. The message is to not give up and to let others know that there is help, there is hope and you are not alone. My goal in writing the book is to bring hope and inspiration to others facing challenges whether in the area of mental health or just life, in general. I am grateful that the book now is in the hands of others. I am a believer that if something is meant to happen, it will but it may not happen as you expect or in the time frame you would like. Because Maryann took the time to assist and direct me, the path ultimately led to the book being published. The final attempt led me to Maryann Karinch with The Rudy Agency. I received many rejections and gave up several times but something would cause it to resurface and I would pursue getting it published once again. So when the journey in trying to get the book published began in late 2006, I never imagined it would have been so challenging or that it would have taken so long. The book title, the chapter names and content of the book all came together rather smoothly when I began the project back in 2003. It is amazing that my dream has become a reality. I am honored to say that my book, A Mother’s Climb Out of Darkness published by Praeclarus Press, was released in June at the Annual Postpartum Support International Conference. More often than not, the narrators of this version of history were my parents, aunts, uncles, my friend’s parents, my other friend’s parents, and even neighbors. History textbooks were the most interesting and fun to read: they were like the Harry Potter of my childhood, in which historical facts are packed in neat little narratives there are good guys and bad guys and the good always win.įast forward to my secondary and high school years, and I’ve grown out of these stories and the school of thought that history has a black-and-white distinction between good guys and bad guys that historical events have a chain of three-act stories stringed together. One of my favorite pastimes during summer holidays was reading through the textbooks for my next school year. |
